An Overview

The City of Middletown Commission on the Arts and Cultural Activities was established by City Ordinance in March of 1972 and revised in 1992. It is now comprised of thirteen Commissioners, two ad hoc members of the Common Council and eleven citizens from the community who are appointed for three-year terms by the Mayor.

The Commission conducts its business through monthly meetings generally held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in City Hall or other locations within the City. The administration of the Commission's business is conducted by Stephan Allison, Coordinator, for the Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture.

For thirty-five years, the Commission has maintained a program of encouraging interest and participation in the arts by providing services, resources, information and events to and for artists, organizations and the general public.

Today, the Commission is an active and effective participant in City life.  Middletown was the first in Connecticut to be named one of the "100Best Small Arts Towns in the United States". This distinction is made possible by a broad base of community support from the City, volunteers, businesses, institutions, corporations, organizations and artists.

Maintaining close links with local arts and culture organizations, Connecticut agencies and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism; the Middletown Commission seeks to enhance and support development of artistic and cultural endeavors in the community with programs and services. These programs and services are made possible by City tax dollars as appropriated by the Common Council and supported by government grants and contributions of local businesses, corporations and individuals.

MCA Creative Wellspring Survey

The MCA Creative Wellspring Survey is administered by the Arts Office of the City of Middletown and funded in large part by The Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism. The purpose of the survey is to create a useable database that will assist the MCA in setting policies and enhancing and/or developing programs to enrich the arts and cultural experiences in Middletown. Our eventual goal is to establish an “Online Cultural Marketplace” which offers information on artists/artistic endeavors/events/opportunities and contact information to the public and where you can collaborate professionally with a diverse group of other like-minded resources, such as artists, institutions, art agencies, presenters, and venues. This collaboration may consist of many different types of interactions, including sharing or gaining specialized knowledge, obtaining access to funding and grants, finding a performance venue, locating an artist or performer, or simply expanding your network of contacts. We expect to include arts/cultural organizations and businesses in this “Online Cultural Marketplace”. Prior to going “live and online”, we will notify you of our intent to open your information to public view and you will have the opportunity to “opt out” of the public dissemination of your survey answers. Your survey data will be then restricted to “aggregate data” use only.

Here is a list of locations throughout Middletown where you may pick up a survey form. Return postage has been paid so you need only take the few minutes required to complete the survey and then drop it in the mail. We hope you will do so today. Any questions? Call us at 860.343.6620 x201 - Thanks.
