A Gateway to the Future of Middletown
Russell Library, the public library of Middletown, celebrated its 125th year in
2001. With a collection of 184,612 items in many formats, the library is one of
the largest and best-used libraries in the state. Almost 1,000 visitors a day
enter the building and more than half of the city's residents hold library
cards.

A 184,612 item collection which includes best sellers,
magazines, art prints, maps, DVD's downloadable material for MP3 players and video cassettes, music CDs, CD-ROMs, large print and genealogy collections, children's books, toys and games.
Large Meeting Room, conference rooms and reading rooms for use, free to
non-profit groups and organizations.
Computerized card catalog (the LION system) provides listing of books,
magazines and other materials at all 20+ LION libraries. Click

Interpreter services available for the hearing impaired for library
programs.

Interlibrary loan service through local, state and nationwide library

Resources for Children

Children Services at the Russell Library serves the literacy
needs of children from infancy through the eighth grade. Parents,
caretakers of children, teachers & students of Children's Literature are all
welcome to utilize the multi-faceted collection and wealth of materials
available. Children's Services has partnered with community agencies
serving the needs of the children of Middletown, including Middletown School
Readiness Council, Middlesex Coalition for Children & Middletown Area
Interagency Council. A wide variety of programs for children and their
providers are available and can be found enumerated on our monthly calendar, web
site and at our service desk.
Totally Teen
- Russell Library Totally Teen, defined by its own
bright-purple neon sign, is an area designed specifically for Teens. The
circulating collection of books and magazines, reflecting the suggestions of
local teens, contains fiction, non-fiction and an impressive graphic novel
section that includes a wide range of magna and super heroes. Soft
seating, as well as tables and chairs offer Teens a place to rest, study, or
meet with friends.

The library was opened and dedicated on May 6, 1951, it was named in memory of Grace (Godfrey) Rider and her brother
Brigadier General Stuart Chapin Godfrey by A. Fremont Rider, founder of the library.
